Total healthcare expenditure

Definition

Since 2006 the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Eurostat and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have been using a common concept to compare the healthcare spending of their members: total healthcare expenditure. In France, this measure is assessed by taking current expenditure on medical care and materials and subtracting daily sickness benefit, a portion of the expenditure on prevention (food safety standards, preventative measures linked to the environment) and expenditure on medical research and training, and adding investment by the healthcare sector (GFCF of the public and private hospital sectors), as well as expenditure linked to disability care and living assistance.

Comparisons between countries are made on the basis of their total healthcare expenditure expressed as a percentage of their respective GDP.
