Legislative district
Definition
Legislative districts are the territorial framework in which each MP is elected to the National Assembly, these MPs being elected by direct universal suffrage for a renewable term of 5 years (except if the legislature is interrupted by a dissolution, article 24 of the Constitution).
Legislative districts are designated by a serial number within each department.
The institution of parliamentary electoral districts, the method for electing these MPs and the first division into legislative districts date from the advent of the 5th Republic in 1958.
Note
According to Article 2 of Law n°86-825 of 11 July 1986: "The boundaries of constituencies are redefined in accordance with demographic growth, after the second general population census after the last boundary definition."
