Committee for health, safety and working conditions (Comité d'hygiène, de sécurité et des conditions de travail / CHSCT)

Definition

Present in all establishments comprising 50 employees or more in private companies and (under certain conditions) public institutions, the purpose of the Committee for health, safety and working conditions is to work to protect the health and safety of workers as well as to improve working conditions. The CHSCT includes a delegation from the staff, and has various means at its disposal to help achieve its goal (information, expert consultation etc.). The employee representatives benefit from time credits and protection against redundancy. In companies with a high level of industrial risk the powers of the CHSCT are reinforced. In the absence of a CHSCT, staff delegates perform the functions normally exercised by the committee.
