Statistical production

The SSP periodically conducts large-scale statistical operations such as the agriculture census.

At more regular intervals, the SSP executes the following surveys:

  • surveys of farmers on the structure of farming concerns, plant crops and livestock production, cultivation methods, accounting results, environment, etc.
  • surveys of agrifood businesses on production, marketing and economic results;
  • surveys of local authorities on waste and water management, in liaison with the Observation and Statistics Office of the Ministry for Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and the Sea, responsible for Green Technologies and Climate Change Negotiations;
  • surveys on land use nationwide.

For its statistical work, the SSP uses administrative documents such as application forms for subsidies under the Common Agricultural Policy (CPA) and the national cattle identification system. In liaison with INSEE, the SSP prepares the agriculture-sector accounts and a large number of economic indices including for wholesale food prices, input prices, and producer prices of agricultural products. The SSP produces balance sheets for agrifood supply chains.

Under the "Annual Agricultural Statistics" program, the SSP compiles agricultural-production data that are consistent at the département, regional, and national levels.

Studies and forecasting

The SSP handles studies for the Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. It is in charge of programming and tracking studies. It carries out studies and assessments of the agricultural sector, forests and agrifood industries. One of the objectives is to provide public actors responsible for defining policies which affect these sectors, with information to work on. They rely notably on data from agricultural statistics.
The SSP regularly prepares and disseminates economic and forward-looking studies, evaluations, outlook surveys and short-term forecasts.

Dissemination

The dissemination network—comprising customer reception, information, assistance, and ordering services—is supported by the Regional Agricultural Statistics Offices, the "Agreste" Documentation and Information Center (CDIA) in Paris, and a sales outlet in Toulouse. Detailed publications and tables are available on the website of Agreste.
