This document is produced by the Banque de France using information provided by the following sources:

The banking sector, or monetary financial institutions, on their own behalf and on behalf of their clients;
The monetary authorities (i.e. the Banque de France);
The customs authorities provide data on imports and exports of goods, collected from businesses;
Other public authorities, who declare their own operations;
Those companies outside the financial sector who are most involved in foreign trade, known as "general direct declarers" (DDGs).

The different headings of the balance of payments cover:

The current transactions account, divided into: goods, services, revenues, current transfers;
The capital account, which includes capital transfers and acquisitions and sales of non-financial assets which are not products;
The financial account, including direct investments, portfolio investments, derivative financial products, other investments and reserve credit notes;
Finally, an "errors and omissions" adjustment item, necessary because debit and credit data entered for each transaction are taken from different declarations which can give rise to errors, omissions or time lags.
