Sources of the data
This document is produced by the Banque de France using information provided by the following sources:
- The banking sector, or monetary financial institutions, on their own behalf and on behalf of their clients;
- The monetary authorities (i.e. the Banque de France);
- The customs authorities provide data on imports and exports of goods, collected from businesses;
- Other public authorities, who declare their own operations;
- Those companies outside the financial sector who are most involved in foreign trade, known as "general direct declarers" (DDGs).
Structures and headings of the balance of payments
The different headings of the balance of payments cover:
- The current transactions account, divided into: goods, services, revenues, current transfers;
- The capital account, which includes capital transfers and acquisitions and sales of non-financial assets which are not products;
- The financial account, including direct investments, portfolio investments, derivative financial products, other investments and reserve credit notes;
- Finally, an "errors and omissions" adjustment item, necessary because debit and credit data entered for each transaction are taken from different declarations which can give rise to errors, omissions or time lags.
